The warm French Onion Soup will be a treat in the winter times for dinner. As cheese, bread or croutons, caramelized onions and chicken or beef stock is all loaded in one dish, the soup is sure to be a wholesome and easy dinner on a chilly day. Type of cheese to use in the soup…
Gruyere is the cheese which is mainly used in a French Onion Soup but if you cannot find out the cheese by the nearby store, Parmesan Cheese and Mozzarella Cheese will be two better options.
What broth to use in the French Soup?
As we have used chicken seasoning powder in the recipe, the type of broth is not mentioned. If you are using a broth in the recipe, be sure to skip the chicken seasoning powder from the ingredient list. Mentioning about broth, beef stock is mainly used in the French Onion Soup.
Extra tip for the day…
If you want a more thick version of the French onion soup to try at home. The easy way to make the soup thicker is to use flour. In a separate bowl, put some flour and some of the soup which is brewing in the pan and whisk them together. When the mixture turns thick pour it into the brewing soup in the pan and mix them well.
Onions- 200g (250g if spring onions are not used)
Bay leaf- 1
Chicken seasoning powder 1tbsp
Spring onion leaves
Pour some oil to a heated pan. Add onions, spring onions and mix well. Let the onion turn translucent.
After the onion turns translucent or glassy in colour, pour 75ml of water. Add a bay leaf, salt, pepper, chicken seasoning powder and mix well. When boiled sprinkle the spring onion leaves on top.
Apply butter/ margarine to both sides of bread slices and cut the bread slices into cubes.
Place Mozzarella cheese on top of the bread cubes and bake for 5mins in 250 degree C till the bread turns golden brown.
Put the baked bread cubes in the soup and serve hot!
